Won't be getting CC01 anymore
I ran out of CC01 right before getting this, but got some more so I could compare side by side. I prefer the Red no 1.
Initial More impressions:
CC01 is more body high, and makes me yawn. Red no 1 is supposedly 'more authentic' an afghan kush phenotype. The smell is more peppery and I think 'seaweedy' than CC01, but both CC01 and Red no 1 have an earthy myrcene smell too. Red no 1 tastes a bit more peppery and seaweedy too but it's not offputting, I actually like pepper and seaweed to eat personally but it's not a super strong taste. It smells more than it tastes to me. The potency is similar to CC01 but a different effect, creeps up more slowly and makes my eyelids a bit more heavy rather than make me yawn. Instead of a heavy tired body relaxation, I get more a warm tingling which could be useful for some types of pain. I don't get as much physical relaxation/pain relief as I do with the CC01, but I don't have huge pain, mostly use for insomnia, so it's hard for me to judge on that. I mostly have inflammation pain in my back also so I think I'll get more relief personally from CBD, THC just helps me deal with the pain and anxiety more than anything.
I guess I could say that CC01 makes me physically more sedated and Red no 1 helps me calm mentally better.
I think I like Red no 1 more than CC01.. first, it's $13/g and comes in 15g tubs which is great. Second, it's a better cure, buds are bigger and less moisture. Well cured/dried. Doesn't come with a boveda but doesn't really need it. I've stored with and without boveda the past week and buds seemed pretty similar between jars. I know that's a big call, saying a better cure than CC01, but the CC01 was never big buds generally and while it was good it wasn't dried out, I had heard reports of it being a bit too moist and had had one jar that was probably more moist than it should have been. Whereas Spectrum cure is always pretty damn good for moisture levels. Trim is excellent too - CC01 trim is great too though so equal marks there.
The main reason I prefer Red no 1 is because I can have 3-4x the amount at higher temps vaping or combusting, than I can of the CC01, without it giving me bad asthma.
So due to the cost and asthma / lung locking, I chose Red no 1 over CC01. They are both good and slightly different though. Will be really interesting to try a blend..
I am a sativa guy though, mostly wanting the most uplifting and racy stuff to help lift my mood and overcome constant low level pain to motivate me to get stuff done/fight through the pain. I only supplement with indica/sedating for when pain is worse or insomnia is worse. I can sleep / survive solely on sativa if need be. But I'm going to try some more options to compare in the coming months to see what works best for me.
I will say that Red no 1 needs time to be appreciated.. it's different to everything else I've tried and it has taken me a week to get used to it and appreciate it fully.
Summary after several weeks use:
CC01 is stronger but only a one/two trick pony - it's body high and sedating which helps with insomnia and pain relief, but even mixed with CBD flower it's still quite potent, harsh on the lungs when combusted or high temp vaped (compared to other strains/phenotypes) at least for me with my asthma (maybe that's a betamyrcene thing affecting me?). If I were only using at night time and only for insomnia or pain relief I might stick with CC01.
But personally I prefer more versatility. Red no 1 has a better taste and flavour and lung effects for me. It's cheaper and is guaranteed by Canopy/Spectrum to conform to TGO100 standards. It's sedating but not heavily so - you can still do things on this and use in the day without getting entirely couch-locked like with the CC01. You can also combine CBD flower (I used Eve) and the Red no 1 is even more versatile then and better for mornings/daytimes. I found myself wanting to use the Red no 1 way more than the CC01.
I've only tried one tub of Red no 1 so was trying to hold off reviewing until get another tub to check consistency between batches/tubs but from my past experiences with Spectrum I expect uncompromising consistency between batches and tubs.
Supplied through ANSPEC - seems to be the source/supplier for a lot of the higher quality products available to patients currently in Australia.
The tubs for Red no 1 are better than the bags Red no 2 used to come in. They are too small/narrow though so you need a brush to scrape the dusties out the bottom.
I am trialling other phenotypes to see if anything else is better than Red no 1 for my needs in the coming month or two so will be a little while before I get another tub to compare consistency between tubs/batches, but will update this review when I get another tub.
Like Spectrum Red no 2, I can highly, highly recommend Red no 1. If you are going to google pictures also make sure you check for AUSTRALIAN Red no 1- Canopy/Spectrum use the same colours and numbers for different phenotypes depending upon the market. So Red no x in UK, Germany or Canada will be different to Red no x in Australia. Less
